The gentrification of Hemlock Falls, home to innkeeper, artist, and amateur sleuth Sara "Quill" Quilliam, has drawn the attention of Edmund Tree. The host of Your Ancestor's Attic has decided to film an episode in town and everyone is searching attics for hidden treasures - including a burglar. Quill, for one, is not impressed with the obnoxious Tree, nor with his television rival, Belter Barcini, who blows into town for what looks like a ratings-booster showdown a "friendly" cook-off between two sparring personalities.

It's a good thing Quill and her sister, Meg, are experts at appraising motives for murder when one of the cooks keels over on camera - because the suspects are piling up, and Quill is chosen to play detective.

One of the nicest things about cozy mystery series is that you can go through them in pretty much any order. Get one after you skipped a few and it will still work as a standalone story with the added benefit of familiar characters. Of course, some of the development that the characters underwent in the intervening books will be missing, but typically that is relatively straightforward to catch up on. I recently had the chance to read a book in the Hemlock Falls Mystery series and that is the position I found myself in. It’s been a few years and therefore a few novels that I skipped, but I was able to plug myself right back in to the story with no problems and very quickly remembered how much I enjoyed the series.

In this novel, the antiques and pawnshop crazes provide the background. One of those uppity and snooty characters you see on some TV shows looks at assorted things that people bring in and determines if it has any value or not. Being snooty and high-falutin, they typically put down the people who bring their “treasures” to be evaluated. The other theme is that of the pawn broker industry where people bring assorted things to a pawn broker to be evaluated and possible purchased. In this novel we get a mash-up of both when both an Antiques dealer and a pawn broker stage events in the town of Hemlock Falls and generate a feud that leads to all kinds of improbable happenings, including, of course, a murder.

The murder kicks our normal crew of characters from the town into action. Sarah Quilliam and her sister Meg, their receptionist Dina, the various boyfriends and husbands who are in law enforcement, and the rest of the town folks jump in to the fray and the mayhem is on. Ultimately, things settle down in the town and the mystery of whodunit is solved.

I really liked this book because of the several plot curves that the author threw in. I was convinced I know who the killer was even before the act took place. I also thought I understood the plot by the middle of the book. I was wrong on both counts! The twists that were thrown in completely threw me off the scent and after they were revealed, all I could do was shake my head and wonder why I did not think of that! Obviously the twists were cleverly disguised and were done in such a logical fashion that I could buy into them. They made lots of sense once the author explained them to us. The last twist was a bit on the shady side, but I could buy into it given the whole flow of the book.

As someone who has enjoyed this series in the past, I am now probably going to go out to get the ones that I missed. There was clearly some development in the main characters’ lives that I want to catch up on, but even more than that, this series is simply fun and with the summer beach reading season almost upon us, I could use a few of those in my stack!

Dread on Arrival A Hemlock Falls Mystery Book 17 (Audible Audio Edition) Claudia Bishop Justine Eyre Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

This series is a proven winner. I love to sit down to read these books, but I hate to put them down. My sleep always takes a back seat to the plot.
great books, the entire series
Claudia Bishop is one of my favorite mystery writers and I always enjoy her books. I wouldn't miss the chance to read a new one.
Love the series
I enjoy this author who makes good reading without being heavy reading. The story is quick if time is limited yet entertaining.
Yep, they all go together to create a great cozy mystery. The inn-keeper and her chef sister are hot on the trail of the evil-doers once again, and they do not disappoint. These sweet mysteries are addictive!
I like the series, as the characters are allowed to move forward in time get married, get new jobs, have kids. The idea of a cooking contest is far-fetched, But it's not just the sisters that engage the reader, it is also Hemlock Falls and its residents.
